The darling of Kickstarter — the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset is no longer the indie developers' dream it once was. Facebook announced that it would be purchasing Oculus VR, the makers of Oculus Rift for $2 billion. The transaction is expected to close in the second quarter of 2014. It was once touted strictly as a gaming device, but CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg said Facebook plans to use its technology for media, communications, and other forms of entertainment; touting VR as having the potential to be the next great computing evolution. Opinions about the purchase are all over the place on blogs, news sites, social media outlets, etc.

The official announcement is as follows:

I'm suddenly more interested in Sony's Morpheus... And seriously... that much stock in facebook. I can't see facebook staying at the top for much longer. I hope they start selling that stock off as soon as they can.
